WaterMinder Alternative: WaterMinder vs Waterllama vs Caffeine vs Water
Looking for a WaterMinder alternative, or deciding WaterMinder vs Waterllama? An honest comparison of caffeine tracking, Apple Watch, privacy and price.
The short answer
- WaterMinder is the veteran of water trackers: on the App Store since 2013, 4.7 stars from about 34,000 ratings, an Editors' Choice, and apps for iPhone, iPad, Mac, Vision Pro, Apple Watch and Android. It logs caffeine per drink and suggests a daily caffeine limit.
- WaterMinder vs Waterllama: WaterMinder is the more configurable, cross-platform tool (nutrients, electrolytes, backup, Android); Waterllama is the more playful, award-winning design with a cheaper entry price.
- Caffeine vs Water (launching soon) is the WaterMinder alternative for people whose question is "will this coffee hurt my sleep tonight?" It estimates caffeine at bedtime, warns before a drink that would push you over, and keeps your water goal on the same screen.
WaterMinder is a mature, polished app, so most people looking for a WaterMinder alternative aren't unhappy with the water side. They want something different from the caffeine side: not just a daily total in milligrams, but how much will still be active at bedtime, and whether the next coffee fits.
A note on bias: we make Caffeine vs Water, so we're biased. Here's how we checked: WaterMinder and Waterllama facts come from their US App Store listings, official websites and (for WaterMinder's caffeine feature) the developer's own blog, as of September 2026. If a listing doesn't mention a feature, we write "not listed". Caffeine vs Water isn't out yet, so it has no ratings and no announced price.

Where Caffeine vs Water is different
WaterMinder's caffeine feature, per its developer's blog, lets you turn on caffeine tracking, attach a caffeine amount to drinks and cups, see a suggested daily limit and sync caffeine to Apple Health. That's useful for keeping a total. What it doesn't describe is time: caffeine you had at 4 pm is still working at 11 pm. That's the part Caffeine vs Water is built around.
A bedtime number, not just a daily total
Say you've had 300 mg today. That's under the common 400 mg daily guideline, so a daily-limit view looks fine. But if 200 mg of it was a cold brew at 4 pm, about 85 mg will still be active at an 11 pm bedtime (at a typical 5.5-hour half-life). Caffeine vs Water shows that on a live curve and against a 50 mg bedtime target. For the sleep research behind that target, see how caffeine affects sleep.
It asks before the drink
Log a drink that would leave 50 mg or more at bedtime, take you past your daily limit, or deliver over 200 mg on its own, and Caffeine vs Water asks first: "Log anyway", "Log a decaf instead" (for coffee drinks) or Cancel. It works the same on Apple Watch and through Siri. You also get "You can still have ~X mg" right now and a last-coffee time that moves as you log, with an optional reminder 30 minutes before it passes.
Plan the day, not just log it
The day planner lets you add the drinks you expect (a 9 am latte, a 2 pm espresso, a pre-workout at 6) and see bedtime caffeine before you've had any of them. Drinks that would break your target are flagged, and optional alerts arrive with "Log it" and "Skip" buttons.
Logging that comes to you, with nothing leaving your phone
Reminders arrive at your usual coffee time (skipped if you've had caffeine in the last 2 hours), and there's an optional alert when you arrive at your usual café, all with a "Log it" button in the notification. There's no account, no ads, no analytics and no network calls; data stays on your iPhone and in Apple Health, and the phone and watch sync directly. More on the watch side in caffeine tracking on Apple Watch.
