Caffeine Tracker on Apple Watch: How to Log Caffeine From Your Wrist

Want a caffeine tracker on Apple Watch? How to log caffeine on Apple Watch with Siri, complications and the Smart Stack, and what a good watch app should show.

The short answer

  • Apple Watch has no built-in caffeine tracker, but on Series 9, Ultra 2 and newer you can log caffeine with Siri: "Log 95 milligrams of caffeine". It goes into Apple Health.
  • For a live caffeine level, a bedtime estimate and complications, you need a caffeine tracker app with an Apple Watch app.
  • The fastest ways to log caffeine on Apple Watch: a Smart Stack quick-log widget, a complication tap, or acting on a reminder notification. Each is one or two taps.
  • A good watch complication shows active caffeine in mg and what will be left at bedtime.

Your watch is on your wrist when you're standing at the coffee counter; your phone often isn't. That's why a caffeine tracker on Apple Watch is where logging actually sticks. If it takes more than a couple of seconds, most people stop logging within a week.

Here's what you can do with the Apple Watch alone, what a proper caffeine app adds, and how to set up complications, the Smart Stack and Siri so logging takes one tap.

How to log caffeine on Apple Watch without an app

The Health app on Apple Watch doesn't have a caffeine screen, but Siri can write caffeine to Apple Health for you. Since watchOS 10.2, Siri on Apple Watch Series 9 and Ultra 2 can access and log Health data, processed on the device. Newer models work the same way.

  1. Raise your wrist and say something like "Log 95 milligrams of caffeine".
  2. Siri adds it to Apple Health with the current time, under Nutrition › Caffeine.
  3. If Siri says it can't, check that Siri is allowed to access Health data in your Health settings.

This works, but you have to know the milligrams (see our caffeine content chart), and Health only shows a daily total. It won't tell you how much is still active or whether a 4 pm coffee will still be in you at bedtime. For the full picture on the iPhone side, see how to track caffeine in Apple Health.

What a good caffeine tracker for Apple Watch should do

Several caffeine apps list Apple Watch support, including HiCoffee (with complications), RECaf (a standalone Watch app), Unbuzz and Waterllama. We compare them in the best caffeine tracker apps.

How to add a caffeine complication

Complications are the small data slots on your watch face. Once a caffeine app is installed, you add its complication like any other:

  1. With the watch face showing, touch and hold the display, then tap Edit.
  2. Swipe left all the way to the end, to the complications screen.
  3. Tap a slot, then turn the Digital Crown to choose the caffeine app's complication.
  4. Press the Digital Crown to save.

Faces with a large rectangular slot (Modular, Modular Duo, Infograph Modular) have room for the most detail, such as active caffeine plus bedtime caffeine. Circular and corner slots suit a single number.

Put quick-log buttons in the Smart Stack

The Smart Stack is the list of widgets you get by turning the Digital Crown or swiping up from the watch face. A quick-log widget there lets you log without opening an app.

  1. From the watch face, turn the Digital Crown or swipe up to open the Smart Stack.
  2. Touch and hold the stack, then tap the add button and choose the caffeine app's widget.
  3. Pin it so it stays near the top.

Sync and privacy

Drinks you log on the watch are saved there first and sent to your iPhone when it's in reach, even after a restart, so nothing is lost on a phone-free run. The iPhone saves them to Apple Health. There's no account and no server: your drinks stay on your iPhone, your watch and in Health. You open the iPhone app once to set it up, and your settings come across to the watch.

Like every tracker, the numbers are estimates based on average half-lives, not a measurement of caffeine in your body. You can try the same model now in our bedtime caffeine calculator.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a caffeine tracker on Apple Watch?

Not built in. Apple Watch can log caffeine to Apple Health with Siri on Series 9, Ultra 2 and newer, but for active caffeine, bedtime estimates and complications you need a third-party caffeine tracker app with a Watch app.

How do I log caffeine on Apple Watch?

Say "Log 95 milligrams of caffeine" to Siri on a Series 9, Ultra 2 or newer to save it to Apple Health. With a caffeine app, tap a drink in its Smart Stack widget, complication or reminder notification.

Can Apple Watch show caffeine on the watch face?

Yes, through a caffeine app's complication. Add it by touching and holding the watch face, tapping Edit, swiping to the complications screen and choosing the app.

Does Apple Watch detect caffeine?

No. No watch sensor measures caffeine. Every caffeine number on Apple Watch comes from drinks you log and an estimated half-life.

Can I log caffeine on Apple Watch without my iPhone?

With Siri on supported models, yes. Most caffeine apps with a Watch app also let you log away from your phone and sync when it's back in range.
