Caffeine Content Chart: Coffee, Tea, Soda and Energy Drinks
How much caffeine is in an espresso, a grande, a can of Monster or a cup of green tea? A side-by-side chart of popular drinks by size, with what each one means for your daily limit and your sleep.
The short answer
- A single espresso has about 63 mg; an 8 oz home-brewed coffee about 95 mg.
- Coffee-shop brewed coffee is much stronger: a Starbucks Grande Pike Place has about 310 mg.
- Tea has less: about 47 mg for black and 28 mg for green per 8 oz cup. Matcha is closer to coffee.
- Energy drinks range from 80 mg (Red Bull, 250 ml) to 300 mg (Bang) per can.
"One coffee" can mean almost anything. Depending on the bean, the brew and above all the size, a cup can hold anywhere from 60 mg to over 400 mg of caffeine. That's the difference between a gentle lift and your entire daily limit in one drink.
Use the tables below to see what's actually in your cup. Figures are typical published values; recipes, roasts and regional versions vary, so treat them as good estimates.
Coffee
| Drink | Size | Caffeine |
|---|---|---|
| Espresso, single | 1 oz / 30 ml | 63 mg |
| Espresso, double | 2 oz / 60 ml | 126 mg |
| Brewed (drip) coffee | 8 oz / 240 ml | 95 mg |
| Brewed coffee, large | 16 oz / 470 ml | 190 mg |
| French press | 8 oz / 240 ml | 107 mg |
| Pour-over | 8 oz / 240 ml | 110 mg |
| Instant coffee | 8 oz / 240 ml | 62 mg |
| Cold brew | 10 oz / 300 ml | 155 mg |
| Nitro cold brew | 12 oz / 350 ml | 215 mg |
| Latte or cappuccino, single shot | any size | 63 mg |
| Flat white (two shots) | 6 oz / 180 ml | 126 mg |
| Decaf coffee | 8 oz / 240 ml | 2–15 mg |
A milk drink's caffeine comes from the number of espresso shots, not the size of the cup. A large latte with one shot has the same caffeine as a small one.

What these numbers mean for you
Your daily total. For most adults the FDA puts the comfortable ceiling at 400 mg a day, and 200 mg in pregnancy. A Grande Pike Place and a can of Celsius is already over 500 mg. More in how much caffeine is too much.
Your sleep. Stronger drinks take longer to clear. With a typical 5.5-hour half-life, a single espresso drops under 50 mg in about 2 hours, but a grande brewed coffee takes around 14–15 hours. See the full cutoff table in when to stop drinking coffee before bed, or try your drink below.
