How Much Caffeine Is in Starbucks Coffee? Every Drink and Size

Starbucks caffeine by drink and size: a Grande Pike Place has about 310 mg, a Venti Blonde 475 mg, a latte 150 mg. Full tables, plus the strongest and weakest orders.

The short answer

  • A Grande (16 oz) Pike Place has about 310 mg of caffeine. A Tall has 235 mg and a Venti 410 mg.
  • Blonde Roast is the strongest: 360 mg in a Grande and 475 mg in a Venti, more than a whole day's 400 mg limit.
  • Espresso drinks are lighter: 75 mg per shot, so a Grande latte, cappuccino or caramel macchiato has 150 mg.
  • Grande Cold Brew 205 mg, Nitro 280 mg, Refreshers about 50 mg, decaf Pike 25 mg.

Starbucks caffeine varies more than most people expect. Two Grande drinks from the same counter can differ by more than 300 mg: a Grande Blonde Roast has about 360 mg, while a Grande Iced Green Tea has 28 mg. Which one you order decides whether you've had a normal morning coffee or most of your day's caffeine before 9 am.

So how much caffeine is in Starbucks coffee? It depends on three things: brewed or espresso, roast and size. The tables below cover every common order by size, using the same values as the Caffeine vs Water drink catalog. Starbucks itself calls its caffeine figures approximate, so read them as good estimates rather than lab results.

Starbucks brewed coffee caffeine by size

Brewed (filter) coffee is where Starbucks caffeine climbs fastest, because every extra ounce is more coffee, not more milk.

Dark Roast155 mg235 mg315 mg390 mg
Decaf Pike Place25 mg
Caffè Misto (half coffee, half milk)150 mg

The lighter the roast, the more caffeine per cup. Blonde beans are roasted for less time and are denser, so the same scoop by volume carries more caffeine. The "bold" taste of a dark roast has nothing to do with strength.

One Venti Blonde is a full day. At about 475 mg, a single Venti Blonde Roast is over the 400 mg a day the FDA considers generally safe for healthy adults. A Venti Pike Place, at 410 mg, is right on it. More on daily limits in how much caffeine is too much.

Espresso drinks: lattes, cappuccinos, macchiatos

A Starbucks espresso shot has about 75 mg. Tall milk drinks get one shot, Grande and hot Venti get two, and iced Venti drinks get three. That's why a hot Venti latte has the same caffeine as a Grande.

The Americano and the shaken espressos get more shots than a latte of the same size, so they are the strongest espresso orders. The mocha gets a little extra from the chocolate. For how a shot compares with a cup of filter coffee, see espresso vs drip coffee caffeine.

Nitro Cold Brew215 mg280 mg

Nitro is served without ice, so a Grande Nitro holds more coffee, and about 75 mg more caffeine, than a Grande Cold Brew poured over ice. Cold brew and iced coffee are compared in detail in cold brew vs iced coffee caffeine.

Frappuccinos use a coffee concentrate, not full shots, so a Grande Coffee Frappuccino has less caffeine than a Tall latte. Refreshers get their caffeine from green coffee extract; a Trenta Strawberry Açaí has about 100 mg. For the tea side, see caffeine in tea.

If you want a Starbucks coffee that still counts as "one coffee", a Tall latte (75 mg) or a Tall Cold Brew (155 mg) is closer to a normal cup than any brewed Grande.

What a Grande Pike Place does to your bedtime

Big doses take a long time to clear. With a typical 5.5-hour half-life, a Grande Pike Place (310 mg) needs around 14.5 hours to drop under 50 mg, the level most sleep research treats as low enough not to matter. A Grande latte (150 mg) needs about 9 hours. A Tall latte needs about 3.5.

So a Grande brewed coffee at 1 pm still leaves about 90 mg in a typical adult at 11 pm. A Grande latte at the same time leaves about 45 mg. You can check your own order and bedtime in the caffeine bedtime calculator, and the full cutoff table is in when to stop drinking coffee before bed.

Starbucks decaf: how much caffeine is left?

A Grande Decaf Pike Place has about 25 mg, roughly a twelfth of the regular version. Decaf espresso shots are also available for any latte or Americano. That's small, but not zero: four decaf Grandes add up to about as much as one Tall latte. More on this in how much caffeine is in decaf coffee.

Why your cup may not match the chart

Starbucks describes its caffeine figures as approximate, and independent testing backs that up. When University of Florida researchers bought the same 16 oz Starbucks brewed coffee on six consecutive days, caffeine ranged from 259 to 564 mg. Bean batch, grind, brew time and how full the cup is all move the number. Use the table as a solid estimate and assume a strong day could be higher.

In Caffeine vs Water, Starbucks drinks are logged at these catalog values, and you can save a custom version if your usual order has an extra shot.
