How Much Caffeine Is in Greggs Coffee? Latte, Americano and Cappuccino
How much caffeine is in Greggs coffee? A large Americano has about 257 mg, a large cappuccino 235 mg, a large latte 208 mg, a flat white 150 mg and an espresso 75 mg. Plus NHS limits.
The short answer
- A large Greggs Americano has about 257 mg of caffeine, more than most coffee-shop Americanos.
- A large cappuccino has about 235 mg and a large latte about 208 mg.
- A flat white has about 150 mg and an espresso about 75 mg.
- These are Greggs' supplier's indicative figures. Greggs doesn't publish regular-size values.
- The NHS advises no more than 200 mg a day in pregnancy. Any large Greggs coffee goes over it.
Greggs is better known for sausage rolls than coffee, but it sells a lot of it, and its coffee is stronger than many people expect. A large Greggs Americano has about 257 mg of caffeine. That's more than a regular Caffè Nero Americano (191 mg) and close to three times a Starbucks UK Tall (89 mg).
The numbers below come from the consumer group Which?, which asked Greggs for caffeine figures in August 2026. Greggs doesn't measure caffeine itself; it passed on indicative values from its coffee supplier as a guide rather than an exact measure. They're the best public figures available, but treat them as good estimates.
Greggs caffeine by drink
| Drink | Size | Caffeine |
|---|---|---|
| Americano | Large, 382 ml | 257 mg |
| Cappuccino | Large, 327 ml | 235 mg |
| Latte | Large, 380 g | 208 mg |
| Flat white | One size, 222 ml | 150 mg |
| Espresso | 30 ml | 75 mg |
Which? compared Greggs' large drinks because their volume (327 to 382 ml) is closest to a Costa medium or a Nero regular. Greggs also sells regular sizes, but neither Greggs nor Which? has published caffeine for them. In espresso drinks, caffeine depends on the number of shots, not the amount of milk. So a regular only has less caffeine than a large if it gets less coffee. If you want to know, ask how many shots go into your size.
The Americano is the strongest drink, which makes sense: it's espresso and water, with more coffee in the cup than the milky drinks. The flat white has less caffeine than the large drinks because it's a smaller cup with less coffee, but it tastes stronger because there's less milk.
Why Greggs coffee is fairly strong
Greggs' coffee is 100% Fairtrade, and Which? reports that Greggs, like Costa, uses a blend of Arabica and Robusta beans. Robusta beans have roughly twice the caffeine of Arabica. Pret and Starbucks use only Arabica. A blend with Robusta is one reason Greggs and Costa sit near the top of the caffeine tables even when their shots are similar in size to other chains'.
Greggs' cappuccino has also crept up. In Which?'s first comparison in 2023, it had 197 mg; in 2026 it was 235 mg. The 2023 study also listed a Greggs filter coffee at 225 mg, but the 2026 study had no Greggs filter figure.
Greggs vs Costa, Nero, Pret and Starbucks
Here's how Greggs compares with the other big UK chains, using the 2026 Which? figures. Greggs is second only to Costa for cappuccino and Americano.
| Chain | Americano | Cappuccino | Latte | Espresso |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Greggs (large) | 257 mg | 235 mg | 208 mg | 75 mg |
| Costa (medium) | 325 mg | 325 mg | 200 mg | 100 mg |
| Caffè Nero (regular) | 191 mg | 221 mg | 175 mg | 67 mg |
| Pret | 180 mg | 180 mg | 180 mg | 180 mg |
| Starbucks UK (Tall) | 89 mg | 89 mg | 89 mg | 45 mg |
Interestingly, the large Greggs latte (208 mg) had the most caffeine of any latte in the comparison, just ahead of a Costa medium (200 mg). Size for size, though, Costa is still stronger for most drinks.
How Greggs compares to your daily limit
The UK Food Standards Agency follows the European Food Safety Authority: up to 400 mg a day is safe for most healthy adults, with single doses of up to 200 mg. During pregnancy the NHS advises no more than 200 mg a day.
- Healthy adults (400 mg): one large coffee leaves room for a second, smaller one. Two large Americanos (about 514 mg) go well over.
- Single dose (200 mg): every large Greggs coffee is above 200 mg. The flat white (150 mg) and espresso (75 mg) are under.
- Pregnancy (200 mg): a flat white or a single espresso fits. Any large coffee is over on its own.
Remember that tea, cola and chocolate count too; a mug of tea is about 75 mg by the NHS's estimate. For more on limits, see how much caffeine is too much. If you're pregnant, see caffeine and pregnancy, and check your own limit with your midwife or GP. Greggs sells decaf coffee too, though it hasn't published a caffeine figure for it; decaf is usually a few mg (see how much caffeine is in decaf coffee).
What a Greggs coffee does to your sleep
Caffeine takes a long time to clear. With a typical 5.5-hour half-life, a large Americano (257 mg) takes about 13 hours to drop under 50 mg, the level most sleep research treats as low enough not to matter. A large latte (208 mg) takes about 11.5 hours and a flat white (150 mg) about 9 hours.
Show as a table
| Half-life | 1 h | 3 h | 6 h | 9 h | 12 h | 24 h |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 4 h | 221 | 159 | 95 | 56 | 34 | 4 |
| 5.5 h | 230 | 182 | 124 | 85 | 58 | 13 |
| 7.5 h | 236 | 199 | 151 | 114 | 87 | 29 |
mg of active caffeine, hours after one 257 mg drink.
A large Americano at 8 am drops under 50 mg by about 9.30 pm. The same coffee at 3 pm would still leave nearly 100 mg at 11 pm. If you grab a Greggs coffee on the way home, a flat white or decaf is kinder to your sleep. For cutoff times, see when to stop drinking coffee before bed.
