Switching to Decaf: What Changes, What Doesn't, and the Half-Caf Math

Switching to decaf cuts caffeine by 90% or more, but not to zero. What actually changes, how much caffeine is in half-caff, and how to switch gently.

The short answer

  • Decaf isn't caffeine-free: an 8 oz cup has about 2–15 mg, versus about 95 mg for regular. A Starbucks Grande decaf has about 25 mg.
  • Half-caff is simple math: half the regular caffeine plus half the decaf. An 8 oz half-caff has about 49 mg; a Grande Pike Place half-caff about 168 mg.
  • The biggest change is at bedtime: a 3 pm Grande coffee leaves about 117 mg at 11 pm; the decaf leaves about 9 mg.
  • Switch over 2–4 weeks via half-caff to avoid withdrawal headaches.

Switching to decaf is the easiest way to cut caffeine without giving up coffee. You keep the taste, the warm mug and the café run. What you lose is most of the caffeine, and with it, some of the late-night wakefulness and the afternoon jitters.

Here's what actually changes when you switch, how much caffeine is left in decaf and half-caff, and how to make the move without a week of headaches.

How much caffeine is in decaf?

Decaffeination removes most of the caffeine, not all of it. The FDA says decaf coffee typically has 2–15 mg in an 8 oz cup. When researchers tested decaf from 10 US coffee outlets, they found 0–13.9 mg per 16 oz serving, and decaf espresso shots from one Starbucks ranged from 3 to 15.8 mg.

The Caffeine vs Water catalog uses these figures:

Decaf drinkSizeCaffeine
Decaf coffee, home-brewed8 oz / 240 ml3 mg
Decaf espresso1 oz / 30 ml1 mg
Starbucks Decaf Pike PlaceGrande 16 oz / 473 ml25 mg
Dunkin' DecafMedium 14 oz / 414 ml10 mg
Tim Hortons DecafMedium 14 oz / 425 ml9 mg
McDonald's DecafSmall 12 oz / 355 ml8 mg
Nespresso Decaffeinato1.35 oz / 40 ml5 mg

For most people, that's nothing to worry about. But it adds up: four Grande decafs a day is about 100 mg, the same as a regular cup of coffee. If you need to avoid caffeine completely for medical reasons, ask your doctor whether decaf is OK. More detail is in how much caffeine is in decaf coffee.

The half-caff math

Half-caff (or "half caf") is half regular, half decaf, either as mixed beans at home or half the shots at a café. The caffeine is simply the average of the two:

DrinkRegularHalf-caffDecaf
Drip coffee, 8 oz / 240 ml95 mg49 mg3 mg
Espresso, single63 mg32 mg1 mg
Latte, two shots126 mg64 mg2 mg
Starbucks Pike Place, Grande 16 oz310 mg~168 mg25 mg
Dunkin' Hot Coffee, Medium 14 oz210 mg~110 mg10 mg
Tim Hortons Original, Medium 14 oz205 mg~107 mg9 mg

Two things stand out. First, a coffee-shop half-caff can still have more caffeine than a full-strength cup at home: a Grande half-caff (~168 mg) beats an 8 oz regular drip (95 mg). Second, you can go further than half. A quarter-caff at home (one part regular, three parts decaf) has about 26 mg per 8 oz cup. Ready-made options exist too: Nespresso's Vertuo Half Caffeinato capsule has about 90 mg.

What changes when switching to decaf

Your sleep

This is the biggest win, especially if you swap the afternoon cup. Here's what a 3 pm coffee leaves in a typical adult at an 11 pm bedtime:

3 pm drinkCaffeineLeft at 11 pm
Starbucks Pike Place, Grande310 mg~117 mg
Same drink, half-caff~168 mg~63 mg
Starbucks Decaf Pike Place, Grande25 mg~9 mg
Drip coffee, 8 oz95 mg~36 mg
Half-caff drip, 8 oz49 mg~18 mg
Decaf drip, 8 oz3 mg~1 mg

A sensible bedtime target is under 50 mg. In a 2025 trial, 100 mg of caffeine had no measurable effect on sleep even 4 hours before bed, while 400 mg disrupted sleep even 12 hours before. Decaf keeps you far below either. Try your own timings in the bedtime caffeine calculator.

Your energy, for a week or so

If you switch everything at once, expect caffeine withdrawal: headache in about half of people, plus tiredness and brain fog. It usually starts 12–24 hours after your last regular cup and lasts 2–9 days. It can happen even if you only drank about 100 mg a day. See caffeine withdrawal for the full timeline.

What doesn't change

The taste is close (though coffee lovers will notice), the ritual is the same, and a cup still counts toward your fluids. Decaf is also a common way to keep coffee during pregnancy (see caffeine and pregnancy) or with anxiety (see caffeine and anxiety).

How to switch to decaf without the headaches

  1. Start with the afternoon cup. Make it half-caff for a week, then decaf. It helps your sleep straight away.
  2. Work backwards through the day. Next swap the lunchtime cup, then the late-morning one.
  3. Keep the morning cup longest. It does the least harm to sleep and it's the one you'll miss most.
  4. Use half-caff as a stepping stone. Mix beans at home, or ask for "half-caf" at the café.
  5. Give it 2–4 weeks. Move to the next step when you feel fine, not on a fixed date.

Frequently asked questions

What happens when you switch to decaf?

Your caffeine intake drops by around 90% or more, so less caffeine is left in your body at bedtime. If you switch all at once, you may get withdrawal symptoms such as headache and tiredness for 2–9 days. Switching gradually through half-caff usually avoids this.

How much caffeine is in half caff coffee?

About half of the regular version. An 8 oz half-caff drip coffee has about 49 mg, a half-caff single espresso about 32 mg, and a Starbucks Grande Pike Place half-caff about 168 mg.

Is switching to decaf good for you?

It can be, especially for sleep, anxiety, palpitations or pregnancy, because it removes most of the caffeine while keeping the coffee habit. For healthy adults drinking under 400 mg a day, regular coffee is also considered safe.

Does decaf coffee have caffeine?

Yes, a little. The FDA says decaf typically has 2–15 mg per 8 oz cup. A Starbucks Grande decaf has about 25 mg.

Can switching to decaf cause withdrawal?

Yes, if you switch abruptly. Withdrawal has been seen after stopping as little as 100 mg a day. Moving to half-caff first and then decaf over 2–4 weeks avoids most symptoms.
